More energy saved than the annual consumption of a large Norwegian town

Our freight shipments in Norway were equivalent to more than the annual consumption of a large Norwegian town. All our electric locomotives run on renewable energy from hydroelectric power. We are Norway's largest rail freight operator.

The diagram shows1): The energy consumption of CargoNet's freight trains running in Norway was less than 20 % compared to if the freight was carried by road. This saving was slightly lower on diesel routes. The diagram shows1): The energy consumption of CargoNet's freight trains running in Norway was less than 20 % compared to if the freight was carried by road. A comparison: In 2009, CargoNet trains running in Norway saved energy equivalent to 771 GWh compared to the amount consumed if the freight had gone by road. This saving is greater than the static energy consumption of the Municipality of Kristiansand or Tromsø in 2008, and almost half of the Municipality of Trondheim same year. (Source: SSB Statistics Norway ”Energy consumption by households in the most populous municipalities in 2008”.)

Your company decides how its freight is to be carried. Protect the environment by choosing reduced fossil-fuel consumption. See more about energy consumption here.

1) Our calculation assumes that the alternative form of freight transport is by 40-tonne articulated lorry or semi-trailer. All the Lorries are assumed to have EURO 4 power units. Rail transport activity is based on CargoNet's actual shipments in Norway during the whole of 2009. Lifting at both ends of the rail link is included, as is a short distance to cover collection and delivery of freight to/from the terminals. The calculations were done using Ecotransit’s  environment calculator.
